Overview

This class is for singers of all contemporary genres (anything other than classical).

I teach from a three-cornerstone method - Power, Path and Performance - which I developed after decades of professional, experiential success. This method uses the synergy of corrective breath, open throat and communication techniques to create the best and most effective vocal performance possible, and has a huge added bonus of eliminating vocal strain. Through the years, this method has proven itself in the deep satisfaction and career successes of my students.

Whether you take one class or a series, you should leave feeling and hearing a significant difference in your voice each time. No matter what prior vocal training (or lack thereof) you have, we start where you are, and you will be amazed at how fast your voice can improve!

What to expect

One-to-One

The first time you take this class, I will get a bit of performance and vocal health history from you and then observe you singing a song as you would in an actual performance situation. I will assess your strengths and weaknesses and then immediately suggest changes to help you gain improvements in your weakest areas. You should leave every class noticing improvement in your ability to sing and also notice that your voice feels even better at the end of the class than when it begins. You'll also leave with homework to practice!

Group

For group classes, we start with a sample of everyone's vocal performance, so each member should be prepared to sing for me right at the front of the lesson. I will individualize the training to fit all members. I'll teach everyone principles of good singing, vocal health, and vocal exercises. I'll also do short one-on-one training with each person, while everyone else looks on and learns from what I teach individuals. As time permits I will try to answer everyone's questions, and you should leave with things to practice!

What you need

You will need:

  • A space where you can stand and sing as you would in actual performance
  • Your webcam set where I can see you at eye level (so you don't have to bend down to talk to me)
  • A mic (if you use one), or similar object to hold. If you're getting ready to audition acapella or will be using a headset or acapella for musical theater, the mic's unnecessary.
  • Your instrument if you play and sing simultaneously
  • Music tracks to sing to.
  • [optional] A boom stand if you use one in performance. Also, if you want to work on studio technique we can use it to simulate being at a recording mic. Don't worry if you don't have one, we'll make do!
  • Be sure and have water with you to drink. Unless you're allergic to it, I recommend diluted pineapple juice (approx 1 part juice to 3 parts water)
  • Eat some protein before the lesson. You'll need lots of energy and a clear mind. We'll also have a lot of fun!

I am a graduate of the Berklee College of Music and a working singer-songwriter in Nashville, TN. Judy Rodman is like no vocal coach I have ever worked with. Her understanding of the voice is deeper and more complex than most, yet her ways of explaining vocal technique are far more cohesive and tangible than I've experienced before. Judy cares about each student and tailors her lesson to their individual needs. HIGHLY recommended.
